How we can help
Explore local history and contact the Historian’s office about research or historic materials. Schuyler Falls was formed from the Town of Plattsburgh on April 4, 1848.
A story shaped by our rivers
The Saranac and Salmon Rivers flow east toward Lake Champlain. Agriculture, timber and water power supported the town’s early industries, and the hamlets of Morrisonville, Woods Mills and Schuyler Falls grew around these waterways.
Town Historian Barb Benkwitt’s histories trace the town’s formation in 1848, its mills and hamlets, and the people who helped shape this community.

How the town took shape
Source wording preserved from the former town website. Current office contacts and hours remain unchanged.
Plattsburgh had been settled and formed as a town in 1785, with the area closest to where the Saranac River meets Lake Champlain being incorporated as a village in 1815 (and as a city in 1902). As town populations grew, ‘daughter’ towns were set off from the original town. From Plattsburgh town were formed Peru (1792), Beekmantown (1820), Saranac (1824) and Schuyler Falls (1848).
